Barrett's Directory for Preston and environs was first published around the early 1840's and then ceased publication some time before the 2nd World War.

It is more of a trade directory than anything else, but does provide the names and occupations of local men. For example, in the 1882 edition, we have a Thos Dodd, railway clerk at Penwortham. Robert Carter was station master at Lostock Hall in 1881, James Iddon was booking office clerk and Bill Moss was porter.

Copies of the Directory are available for inspection in the County Record Office and Harris Library in Preston and we are grateful to Robert Gregson for providing the following information that deals specifically with Lostock Hall.
